This book is fantastic! I cannot wait for more. Wiegan really gives Stephen King a run for his money, especially since these events are true. As someone who grew up in Wisconsin, he made me feel like I was back in the northwoods again. I know how the small town police work as well as the big money in Illinois. He nails it on the head in his story and draws you in with his charactors and his fast pace. Once I started reading, I could not put it down. WELL DONE! When is the next book coming out? From The Lake eBook David Wiegan Reviews
An excellent book that I would highly recommend. It has a nice mix of mystery, intrigue and action...and even a bit of romance. I really felt I was "in the story" and actually on that lake. Once I started I could not stop reading it. Does anyone know if the author has any more books coming out soon?
Dan McFarland, age 23 and single, is a recent college graduate and has started his career as a rookie deputy sheriff in the north woods. It is 1969 and he is learning the ropes, working the night shift with a variety of other deputies. The story develops as he and his partner are called to investigate screams heard from across a fog shrouded lake. This is only one of the vividly depicted responses, car accidents, rowdy drunks at local taverns and missing teenagers. Working the night shift, McFarland finds sleep difficult at times; his mind returning to the mystery at Loon Lake. Told by his boss to drop his investigation, he turns to a retired, elderly deputy for advice. McFarland slowly and methodically pieces the puzzle together of the mystery on the lake, under the threat of being fired. Sleep becomes even more difficult as he meets the new attractive physician at the local hospital. I found myself having to force myself to put the book down, to not read another chapter. Based on events that McFarland experienced in 1969 the reader feels himself drawn into the events "From The Lake". The novel could easily be made into a movie as the suspense kept me turning the pages. Now that I have completed the book, I plan on rereading it and savoring each and every event. I would highly recommend this book as it is a true portrayal of the life of a deputy sheriff in the north woods.
When young deputy sheriff Dan McFarland and his partner arrive at a church camp on the shores of a remote lake in the north woods to investigate a possible murder, they are met by several legitimately shaken kids who heard blood curdling screams coming from a remote campsite across the bay. They canoe to the campsite and search for clues, but find nothing. McFarland's boss dismisses the call as a hoax or a prank and closes the case, but the fear McFarland saw in the kids' eyes was real, and he's compelled to start an investigation on his own time. As a poor underpaid anti-establishment deputy sheriff in a remote area, the reader follows his exploits as he tries to uncover the truth that happened at the lake that night. As the plot grows thicker, McFarland and his bumbling partners respond to horrible car wrecks, car chases, bar room brawls, and encounters with criminals, a shady attorney, and a young beautiful doctor. When his corrupt and incompetent boss of a county sheriff has enough, McFarland takes things into his own hands, only to discover his has bitten off more than he can hope to chew. As the story develops and nears it's exciting and frenzied ending, you will be flipping the pages faster and faster. This book is well written, an easy read, and holds your attention from chapter to chapter. Based on true events when the author was a deputy sheriff while in his 20s, everything in the book is both believable and accurately portrayed. This book will appeal to any one who enjoys murder mysteries or stories about small town law enforcement in the north woods of the mid west. Highly recommended.
I'm not a mystery reader but I enjoyed this book a lot. Being from the Northwoods, I could relate to Wiegan's personalities and descriptions of locations. Fun.
Very well written suspense thriller! it kept me the edge of my chair through the entire book. I recommend this to all readers.
